St Albans Abbey

This massive church pictured here is known to locals simply as The Abbey, Today, it’s actually a cathedral of the Anglican church. There's a long religious history in St. Albans going back to Roman times when St Alban became the first British martyr here.

I really enjoyed wandering around the Abbey as it's beautiful inside and out. If you look about midway back in this photo, you'll see some architecture that looks much different, this is actually all that remains of an older Norman Abbey built in 1077. The rest of the church is a very romanticized gothic structure from the 19th century. It was funded by a benefactor who was more concerned with his vision than historical accuracy. So what we have is more fantasy than reality but beautiful in its own way.

An added bonus while I was taking photos of the church was the sky. It was streaked with clouds and as you can tell the church was bathed in light. But in the right hand of the picture, you can see some sort of atmospheric phenomena - it looks like the sun reflecting off the clouds, but I'm not sure what the source was, just that I had to frame this photo in such a way to include it. A sun dog of some type perhaps?
