Crossing Over

This black and white picture of Saint Pauls' Cathedral was taken from the Millennium Footbridge that stretches over the Thames. I seemed to have developed a small crush on this bridge as I spent multiple days of my brief visit taking photos here.

This particular one is amongst my favorites. I used an exceptionally low "depth of field" so that very little in this image is in focus. Even the cathedral dome itself is only partly in focus. I love how the people in this print are so out of focus to become little more than artistic representations of people, near silhouettes. And the darker metal plating on the bridge almost becomes an arrow to usher one's eye onward.

In some ways this reminds me of the Iconic black and white photos of Saint Paul's during WWII, with the dome intact over a burning city. There's no sense of danger in the photo, but there is tension between the dark shadows of the foreground and the dome sort of the known versus unknown.
