Old and New - St Paul's and the Millennium Footbridge
There is something truly majestic and, yes, iconic, about the massive dome of Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. The way it rises above the skyline on the Thames is just unforgettable. And I've read that Sir Christopher Wren's plan to put a dome on the new Saint Paul's (after the fire of 1666) was greatly resisted at the time.
It's amazing how architecture that was not widely popular can later become classic. The Millennium Footbridge, also pictured here, was similarly met with criticism. But I love that London is un-afraid to mix incredibly modern architecture with classics. After all, London is a thoroughly modern city not a period museum or amusement park.
I have to comment on the clouds in this photo as they were incredibly dramatic and seemed to frame the dome of Saint Paul's. I am ever amazed by the clouds in Britain. They seem to practically hang in the sky just out of reach, not miles above. They loom and they have drama the likes of which I don't see as often anywhere lese. For someone who is less thrilled with clear blue skies, London and Britain are this photographer's dream.
