I visited the Vatican and Saint Peter's Basilica on multiple days during my trip to Rome and left convinced that one could practically spend an entire visit here and not run out of things to do. Saint Peter's, pictured here, was on its own quite, worth a visit. Of course, I am forever enchanted by ancient churches and cathedrals. When we were building structures like these, they tended to be lifetime commitments, building plans that would not be realized in a single generation. And when I visited, it had not been long since I'd watched the funeral for Pope John Paul II unfold in this piazza.

Although I came on multiple days with differing weather, this view of the basilica beneath moody skies on my first visit remains the most vivid in my memory. And I adore the wet pavement reflecting those skies in this print.
